AFC - Defending champions Iran have avoided hosts Syria in the group stages of the 2002 West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship. In the draw for this year's tournament, held in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday morning, Iran were placed in Group A with Lebanon and Jordan, while Syria are to play in Group B with Palestine and Iraq. The tournament will be played at the Al Abbassiyyine Stadium in Damascus, Syria from August 30 to September 7. Iran will kick off the event with a match against Jordan on August 30, while the hosts take on Palestine later that same day. Iran won the inaugural WAFF Championship in Jordan in 2000, beating Syria
