Persepolis Hit By Khalili Cruciate Injury

GOAL - Tehran giants Perspolis were handed a big blow to their title defense hopes when their ace striker, Mohsen Khalili, was diagnosed with a possible torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) earlier this week.

Khalili who had accompanied the Iranian national squad to their summer training camp in Spain experienced some discomfort in his left knee and the initial examinations suggested that the injury may require surgery.

If true the striker could be out of action for at least six months.

Speaking to reporters, Perspolis FC spokesman Majid Farrokhzadi said: “We have spoken with Khalili on the phone, and with Coach Ali Daei’s help may be able to have him examined by Bayern Munich’s medical staff for a second opinion.”

In response to a question regarding the rumors that Perspolis may not extend Khalili’s contract because of this injury Mr. Farrokhzadi responded, “Khalili is a member of our club and we will stand by him even if he is not able to play for the next six months.”

Khalili played a crucial role in Persepolis’ championship season last year. He netted a league high 18 goals most important of which was arguably the first goal scored in the 2-1 defeat of Sepahan of Isfahan in the last game of the season.

That victory secured the title for the Tehran side.
