Incident during friendly game played by Iranian, British footballers condemned

IRNA - The British embassy in Tehran issued a communique here Wednesday and condemned setting fire on Iran's national flag on the sidelines of a friendly game played by Iran's National Football Team and a British team.

The incident, which took place on the sidelines of a friendly game played by Iran's National Football Team and the British Queen Parks Rangers, was issued on July 23. The Iranian footballers lost the game 3-0.

According to the communique, the British government has regretted such acts.

In reaction to the incident the British embassy issued the communique only after it was said that as an objection to setting fire on Iran's national flag, rallies are to be staged in front of the premises of British embassy in Tehran.

The communique added that a limited number of hooligans decided to stop the game by taking up an insulting approach.

"Though they were present during the game, they could hardly be considered as supporters or representatives of a more extensive thinking trend," added the document.

It eventually condemned the vicious measure instead of making a positive use of the opportunity.
