Juve's win, coupled with both their title rivals Inter and Roma failing to claim victory, means that Juve close the gap on their rivals as the race for the Serie A championship hots up. The home side started the game the brighter and it was a total surprise when David Trezeguet broke the deadlock in the 7th minute. The France international received the ball on the turn and his left-foot shot took a fortunate bounce of a divot and the ball looped over the despairing dive of Milanese. The goal sparked the home side into life and Juve's defence was tested but Paolo Montero and Lilian Thuram defended stoutly enough to prevent Perugia from getting a foot back in the game. Both sides looked as though they were beginning to settle to take the 1-0 scoreline into the break but Alessandro Del Piero thought differently. Edgar Davids fed the ball into the mercurial strikers feet but as he went to shoot, Del Piero was hauled down in the box and the referee had no option but to award a penalty. Del Piero drove the ball home from the spot to make the scoreline 2-0. The away side pushed to kill the game off in the second half and it was only a matter of time before the lead was increased. Pavel Nedved broke free on the left hand side, drilled the ball across and Christian Zenoni drilled the ball home from the edge of the box. Six minutes later, Del Pieiro scored his second and 15th of the season to make the score 4-0. Perugia threw caution to the wind and were caught at the back. Gianluca Zambrotta broke, squared the ball to Del Piero and the talisman slotted home to kill all hopes of a Perugia fightback. Perugia now lie in 13th position and are definitely in the relegation dog fight. Juve, on the other hand, go from strength to strength and look more than capable of claiming the Serie A title.
